Shirley JoAnn Grunsted Fredrickson

Shirley JoAnn Grunsted Fredrickson, 86, of Mesa, Arizona passed away Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Banner Medical Health Center while surrounded by her family. Services in Arizona will be on March 20, 2022, at the Superstition Room, (11214 E Laguna Azul Circle, Mesa) with visitation from 1-3 PM, and a memorial service at 3:00 PM. Services in Forest City, Iowa will be on June 4th, at First Baptist Church, with visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 AM followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM. Shirley was born in Roland, Iowa on July 5, 1935, to Sherman and Sadie (Hall) Thompson. She married Paul Grunsted on December 28th, 1957, in Roland, Iowa; he preceded her in death in 2003. She later married David (Dave) Fredrickson on September 10, 2011, in Lakeville, Minnesota.

Shirley and Paul raised their family on a farm near Grand Meadow, MN. Shirley was a long-time member of Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church of Forest City and Sunland Springs Village Chapel in Mesa. While raising her children and helping on the family farm she attended Mankato State University (now called Minnesota State University), where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education. Shirley was a long-time educator and enjoyed her career teaching business courses to high school students for 25 years after which Shirley and Paul retired to Mesa, Arizona.

Shirley and Dave lived in Mesa and Forest City and enjoyed their time visiting with family and friends, playing cards and traveling. Shirley’s interests in traveling with family took her to Italy, France, China, Norway, New York City, the lakes of northern Wisconsin, the 50+ years of family reunions in Clear Lake, Iowa, family fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada, stops in Oklahoma, cruises with Dave in recent years and too many graduation ceremonies to count.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Dave; her children, Gregory Grunsted, Michael (Joanne) Grunsted, David (Nellie) Grunsted, Stefanie Grunsted, Kathleen (Leslie) Tune, John (Shelly) Grunsted and Kristine Grunsted; her stepchildren Sue (Jeff) Port, Tim (Karen) Fredrickson and Carol (Doug) Tweeten; her grandchildren, Daniel and David Grunsted, Jaydon and Josh Grunsted, Thomas Cama, Ashley (Lyndon) Allen and Eric Tune, Brittany (Jess) Daily, PJ, Michael and Sheridan Grunsted, and Nicholas and Emma Malandrino; her step grandchildren, Josh and Zack (Chloe) Port, Lynnea (Ray) Smith and Danika Fredrickson, and Ryan (Jenna), Drew and Luke Tweeten and step great grandchildren Elsie and Grant Tweeten. Shirley was preceded in death by brothers Gary and Dean Thompson.
